Model Hints and Tips

Navicat provides several helpful shortcuts and features to make working on your diagram canvas faster and more efficient.

General Canvas Shortcuts

Locate Object in Canvas

Double-click an object in the left pane to instantly jump to it on the canvas.

Delete Object from Model

Select an object on the canvas and press SHIFT+DELETE.

Open Object Designer

Double-click an object in the left pane or directly on the canvas.

Get Object Statement

Select and copy an object on the canvas, then paste it into any external text editor.

Reorder Fields

Select an object on the canvas and highlight the specific fields, then drag them to your desired row position.

Move Selected Fields to Create New Table

Select an object on the canvas and highlight the specific fields, then drag them outside to the empty space of the canvas.

Move Selected Fields to Another Table

Select an object on the canvas and highlight the specific fields, then drag them to another table.

Duplicate Selected Fields to Another Table

Select an object on the canvas and highlight the specific fields, then the CTRL key and drag them to another table.

Add Vertex (Line / Arrow / Curve)

Select the line, hold the SHIFT key, and click on the line where you want the new vertex.

Delete Vertex

Select the line, hold the SHIFT key, and click directly on the existing vertex.

View Object's Model & Database

Press and hold the SPACE bar.

Switch to Hand Mode

Press and hold the SPACE bar, then click and drag to pan across the diagram canvas.

Add or Edit Fields (Without Object Designer)

Select an object and click the object name on the canvas, and then press TAB/DOWN ARROW to add/edit fields. Navicat will predict field types according to field names you entered

Custom Field Modifiers

While typing field names directly on the canvas, you can use these special characters:

Predictive Field Types

If you do not manually specify a data type, Navicat will automatically predict and assign a field type based on the name you enter according to the following rules:

Predicted Data Type

Triggered By (Field Name or Suffix)

INTEGER / int / int4 / NUMBER

Suffix: id, no (If it is the first column, it will automatically be predicted as a Primary Key)
Suffix: num
Exact matches: qty, number, age, count

DECIMAL(10,2) / decimal(10,2) / NUMBER / REAL / money

Suffix: price, cost, salary

FLOAT / double / float8 / NUMBER / REAL / float

Words involving: size, height, width, length, weight, speed, distance

DATE / datetime / date / TEXT / datetime2

Words involving: date, time

VARCHAR(255) / varchar(255) / VARCHAR2(255) / TEXT

All other field names not matching the rules above.
